Russia has convicted "an American spy" of passing military secrets to the US defence department in a Cold War-style case that is embarrassing for both countries.
Gennady Sipachyov, a Russian citizen whose age and profession have been kept secret, was found guilty of "state treason in the form of espionage" and sentenced to four years in a maximum-security prison camp.
